Introduction to Liquid Filtration

Course: Full Day, 0.8 CEUs
Wu Chen, Wenping Li, Chris Wallace – Instructors

This course is designed for one to learn the basic solid/liquid separation (liquid filtration) from industrial application perspective. The full spectrum of solid/liquid separation technology and available equipment will be covered with applicable testing methods so one can be aware of options and competing technologies. Simple fundamental principles behind the filtration and separations are discussed to enhance the understanding. Filter media, filter aid, coagulation and flocculation are also important part of the curriculum to meet your filtration needs.

Course Outline:

  • Introduction
  • Particles and Fluid Properties
  • Principles of Solid/Liquid Separation
  • Liquid Filtration Media
  • Pretreatment
  • Solid/Liquid Separation Equipment & Testing Methods
  • Panel Discussion and Award of Course Certificate

Instructor Bio:

Dr. Wu Chen is a Research Scientist at the Dow Chemical Company. He has over 25 years of practical experience in solid/liquid separation, gas filtration technologies and markets. His experience includes filtration business development, full scale equipment and system design, capital project implementation, start up, operation trouble shooting, laboratory test design and fundamental understanding of principles involved in filtration and separations.

He is an AFS Fellow Member and has been teaching this course in different organizations and countries for over 15 years. He is currently the chair of AFS Education Committee and the coordinator of AFS short courses.

He is currently the chair of AFS Education Committee and the coordinator of AFS short courses. He has served as the chair of AFS, board of directors, and conference chairs in the past. His was awarded AFS Frank Tiller Award in 2002, AFS Well Shoemaker Award in 2005 and Fellow Member Award in 2010. He also teaches the solid/liquid separation course at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers continuing education program.

Dr. Wenping Li is the R&D Director of Agrilectric Research Company and is in charge of product development and application, product quality and filtration lab management. She has over 15 years of practical industrial filtration experience. Before joining Agrilectric, she worked with Prof. Frank M. Tiller, the father of modern filtration theory, at the University of Houston from which she built in depth understanding of fundamentals in filtration.  She has 2 patents, over 40 publications, including contributions to filtration sections in Perry’s Chemical Engineers’ Handbook and Albright Chemical Engineering Handbook.

Chris Wallace is the Vice President of Sales for Filtration Technology Corporation (FTC) in Houston, TX.  Over the past 14 years, he has been involved in production engineering, application engineering, research and development, and technical sales of cartridge filters for solid/liquid separation and gas/liquid separation in the oil & gas, petroleum refining, petrochemical, industrial and environmental industries.  He holds a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Tulane University.
